This recap and review contains spoilers for S2E12 Los Huesos.
Ms. Debbie Allen is back in the scene! Debbie Allen plays team leader Hondo’s mom (Shemar Moore).
The Mexican FBI has an agent Cruz undercover who has is captured by the Huesos gang. Captain Cortez, Jessica, helped take down the gang back in 2012 and never blew her cover. The Mexican government is asking her to go back undercover to gather intelligence. Hondo is concerned for Jessica’s safety and sends Chris along, one of his team.
Jessica is welcomed back into the fold when she arrives in Mexico, but of course she is tested. Raul, the gang leader, asks Jessica and Chris to locate one of his crew that ran away after the man’s girlfriend snitched. If they give this man to Raul he will be killer and they know it. They need a plan B.
Hondo has a heart to heart with his mom. He is struggling with whether he is making a difference.
“Focus on what is in front of you, that’s all you can control.”
Mama Hondo is wise.
Jessica and Chris make it back to Raul, and they show him a fake video of them killing the guy they were supposed to find. This is enough evidence for Raul and he decides to send Jessica back to LA to find out who Cruz works for. Chris, under the guise of deleting the video, sends Street the address of where they’ll be in LA.
Hondo and the team raid the address and get Cruz out alive. Unfortunately, it’s too late for the girls. Raul’s right hand man has a man on the inside who saw the guy that is supposed to be dead alive and well at the police station. Jessica and Chris’ cover is blown!
Luckily these women are good at their job and resourceful. They shot their way out of a chase and made it back home to fight another day.
Even though Hondo and Jessica used to date, I like that he is genuinely happy for her in her new relationship. I don’t recall this new guy from any previous episodes, I like how the writers just worked him in there.
Hondo has a great relationship with his mother. They’re able to speak with each other honestly. Their interaction was great to see in this episode. I think we’ve seen a little of everyone’s family dynamic so far, except for maybe Cortez. This second half of season two is off to a great start.
