This review does not contain spoilers for the Amazon Prime Original Series Homecoming.
The series centers around the Homecoming program, a facility that helps soldiers adjust to being back home. The story surrounds a counselor named Heidi, played by Julia Roberts, and veteran Walter, played by Stephan James.
The story is told with the past events at Homecoming run simultaneously with the present.
The story is very interesting, pulling you in within the first episodes. You can tell there is something shady going on at the facility but the audience is unable to put their finger on what it is.
Heidi is given the job of administrator, basically running the whole facility, but with only three years of experience. Anyone watching would think this was odd but she moves forward and accepts the responsibility.
When the story picks up in the future Heidi states she worked at Homecoming “some years ago.” The program is no longer in existence and when the audience finds out why you begin to wonder what happened with Heidi, Walter, and the rest of the patients.
The story of Homecoming is revealed due to an investigation sparked by a complaint filed with the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General.
Watch this with me?
Yes! I give it a 4 out of 5.
I enjoyed the series. The acting was superb, and there was a tone of suspense, intensified by the music, that carried through the whole series.
Each episode kept you on your toes, wondering what Heidi did or did not know. There was never a dull moment. On the flip side I was conflicted with being angry and annoyed with Heidi for what she was doing, while also feeling sorry for her. She wanted to believe she was doing something good, but deep down questioned herself.
I do wish there was more of an explanation about the specifics of the program. After watching I am still not sure about some of the methods used, how the program was developed, or how the company came up with the idea. That would have been nice information to know.
I think there is definitely an opportunity for a second season, maybe they will tell more details about the program in the second season. There may also be some unresolved issues between Walter and Heidi. As well as more to explore in the investigation.
Since I binge watched this series I nearly missed the questions on the episode thumbnails, such as “Whose fault is it?, How much did Heidi know?, and What exactly did you see”? The episode titles framed as questions were an interesting touch. Take a look at the episode titles, they will make you think as you watch the series.
For those of you who may miss it, there is a scene following the end credits of the last episode, DO NOT MISS IT! This may be some foreshadowing for season two.
