Legacies: There’s a Mummy on Main Street

This review contains spoilers for S1E12 There’s a Mummy on Main Street

Legacies is a spin off of the CW’s The Originals, following a family of power-hungry thousand year old vampires. The Originals was also a spin-off of the CW’s Vampire Diaries. Legacies follows Hope Mikaelson (daughter of Klaus Mikaelson, an original), a tribrid (Witch/Werewolf/Vampire) making her way in the world.

Though the show is based around teenagers, just how Vampire Diaries began, the series has less intense violence and gore in comparison to The Originals or Vampire Diaries. Though I love a good throat gnashing there is plenty of hand to hand combat and supernatural beings to keep your attention.

In this episode Alaric, Dorian, Emma, Hope, Lizzie, Josie, and Kaleb go on a road trip to locate a mystical urn. The urn is one of a few supernatural items needed to free Malivore. If the urn is collected by a supernatural being and delivered to Malivore, supernatural beings will be forgotten, just as it happened in the past.

“Dr. Saltzman, this minivan is very white of you.” This line took me out. The writing of the show is definitely on par with the cast of characters. I always wonder how adult writers write teenage stories so well, so creative.

Dorian is left at a river to dive for the urn. Alaric dropped the urn in the water while he was infected with a magical slug. Dorian locates the urn but encounters a mummy as he attempts to head back to town. (I like how Dorian closes his eyes when the mummy comes, like it will disappear.)

Ryan, an agent from Triad, the agency containing Malivore, shows up under the guise of crisis clean up. He, Hope, and Alaric immediately recognize each other from a previous encounter. Ryan convinces them to help him catch the mummy and compel the towns people to forget all of the supernatural events of he day.

Alaric and the kids do help, while Emma goes off looking for Dorian, but they figure out who Ryan really is and plan to keep the urn for themselves. After taking down the mummy Alaric and the kids head out of town. As soon as they pick up the urn they run into Ryan who’s kidnapped Emma and Dorian as leverage for the urn.

I’m super confused about how four witches, a vampire, and a werewolf can’t take on a couple of humans. After they’ve just taken down a supernatural mummy, somehow they forget how to use their powers? Moments like these in television shows where the next move should be obvious but then doesn’t happen, are so confusing to me. I suspect maybe Alaric didn’t want the children to kill the men. Since Ryan knows about their school he would have come after them if they let the men live.

In a surprising move Dorian quits after he finds out that Alaric kissed his girlfriend Emma. This is slightly odd to me, only because though Alaric was not infected by the magical slug, at the time, like she was during the kiss, he did not know that she and Dorian were dating. The issue may have been that Alaric didn’t tell him about the kiss as soon as he found out Dorian was with Emma. Dorian will be a great loss, he has to figure out a way to get him back.

Watch this With Me?

Vampires, werewolves, witches? YES! Of course! I give the show a 4 out of 5.

I was not sure how this series would turn out, but only by a very small percentage. The Vampire Diaries and The Originals were a hit. The series isn’t as dark as its predecessors but it hits the mark. There is comedy, teenage feuding, love stories, and my personal favorite, the supernatural.

The acting is great, everyone is on point with their performance. The stories are pretty well written and in line with the great writing of the previous series. If you are a fan of the supernatural you will become a fan of this show.
