The Resident: Adverse Events

This review contains spoilers for S2E16 Adverse Events.

With young Henry still in the hospital, Conrad thinks of ways he can help Zoie. Every three minutes Henry’s heart would stop due to the malfunction of a QuoVadis device. Had he not been in the hospital when he passed out he may have died. Bell attempts to convince the rest of the board that the hospital should halt the use of all QuoVadis products but they are not convinced and believe the relationship has been good up to this point. Conrad’s dad, Marshall, even chimed in and said should QuoVadis go down Chastain wants to be on the right side of the situation. This would be a smart move, and Marshall is a business man, I would have likely taken his advice.

Gordon of course steps in. He is offering to pay Zoie $3.5M if she does not go to the media about Henry’s condition and the defective QuoVadis device. Zoie eventually accepts, knowing that there is no way she will be able to pay for Henry’s treatment since she will likely lose her job. Henry will be transferred to another hospital where he will be treated.

This is so heart wrenching because you know the device doesn’t work so Henry will continue to be in and out of the hospital the rest of his life with seizures, and Zoie just has no way to pay his medical bills. She sees no other way out. Since Zoie has accepted the money it’s likely we won’t see her again at Chastain. Conrad was so close to the family it is hard to believe we would not see them again.

Gordon is in the process of transmitting live surgeries where several members of the military will receive the same compromised device Henry received. His claim is that the device with help with the effects of post-traumatic stress syndrome. Devon and Mina showing up and showing out is a bold move. Devon and Mina discreetly try to convince the army not to use QuoVadis devices. Even though the Army isn’t convinced, Devon and Mina persist. They run into Dr. Austin’s mentor who is on the VERGE of telling them what he knows about the fraud when security escorts them out. But oh won’t he do it! Marshall find’s proof that QuoVadis devices are made in China and relabeled as being made in the United States. The Army is not allowed to use medical devices made outside of the US.

When the surgeries are abruptly stopped and the military folks walk out in the middle of the event I thought Gordon would blow a gasket but he kept his cool. In the midst of his embarrassment he addresses Dr. Austin’s mentor, telling him they should stick together, however, I have the feeling that Gordon has something sinister planned for his doctor pal.

Dan Lauria guest stars on tonight’s episode. You may know Dan from his six season run on The Wonders Years. This was one of my favorite shows growing up, I watched it religiously. Dan plays Simon Oritz, a janitor who has been at Chastain as long as Bell. When Bell notices some swelling tests reveal Simon has a heart condition. This is one Dr. Austin just couldn’t save. Simon doesn’t make it but we do get to see the human side of Bell. He is very cunning, and like Conrad, the audience can get pulled in to believing he only cares about himself. We have seen Bell pull some conniving moves but we begin to see more and more that he has a heart.

Alec and Nic have a moment in his trailer clinic. This really concerns me. None of the relationships on the show are solid and I am beginning to wonder if they ever will be. Conrad has resolved his issues and NOW Nic seems to have some commitment issues. Mina also can’t commit to Micah, she really has us on pins and needles waiting on the answer to his engagement. Devon left his finance and the girl he likes has disappeared. This is the second go around for Conrad and Nic and I hope they make it to the next stage of their relationship.

It looks like Marshall loves being in bed with the devil. When his limo pulled off I thought either one of two things would happen, (1) his limo would blow up because Gordon wants him dead, or (2) he would call Gordon to purchase QuoVadis. Conrad’s dad is in the business of making money, so if he believes he can make a dollar from QuoVadis he’s going to make the deal happen. This isn’t unexpected but it is unfortunate since I know this may drive a wedge between he and Conrad.

The Resident airs Monday nights on Fox.
