This review contains spoilers for S2E11 New Beginnings.
The season opens with Bobby meeting Athena’s parents. I have been waiting for this moment ever since I saw the previews for the episode.
Some of you may recognize the actress playing Athena’s mother as Ms. Beverly Todd. Ms. Todd played Ms. Levias in the classic 80’s movie, and a favorite of mine, Lean On Me starring Morgan Freeman.
When Athena says, “KIDS!”, they knew just what to do. Athena has a moment with her mother, in protection of Bobby, but it quickly turns into an Athena bashing fest. All her mother seems to see is all of the ‘mistakes’ she has made. Athena is living her life for her, and not for her mother, and here is where the conflict lies.
Maddie’s ex-husband Doug has befriended Chimney, unbeknownst to him. The moment it was revealed that Chimney’s new friend was also Maddie’s ex-husband, I knew the situation would go south, fast.
Interestingly enough, Maddie files for divorce with intentions of moving forward with Chimney.
These episodes! There is always some twist! When a child calls 9-1-1 on his father Maddie and Athena aren’t convinced that everything is as the father leads them to believe. Athena lets her gut guide her and finds out the boy was kidnapped and the father may have another child in tow. Athena is good, and I love to watch her work.
“This right here is your stop!”
Athena, working with a detective, is able to locate the two boys and return them to their parents. It was great to see those boys make it out.
This episode was well written, particularly the interaction between Athena and her mother. The introduction of this relationship may be used to foreshadow the future of Bobby and Athena, though I hope this isn’t the case.
What we all have been waiting for goes down in this episode. Doug stabbing Chimney outside of Maddie’s apartment gives him the perfect opportunity to gain entry and take Maddie by surprise. I can see this intensity carrying on through the next couple episodes, and hopefully the season ending with a wedding.
9-1-1 airs Monday nights on FOX.
I kept saying Athena’s mom looked familiar. The little boy on this episode is a friend of mines son. He did a good job with his first major acting role. I pray Chimmey makes it. They showed a funeral in the future, so that’s a true cliffhanger.
Lean on Me is my movie so I recognized her right away, I just couldn’t remember her character’s name. Those boys did a great job. I’ll never know where children get their acting chops from.
