The Resident: If Not Now, When??

This review contains spoilers for S2E20.

This episode started out intense and ended even more intense.

This episode picked up with the conversation between Nic and Conrad about the future of their relationship. Nic doesn’t want to make any progress so Conrad moves on without her. From the outside looking in Nic seems to be less interested now that Conrad isn’t a project for her, someone for her to take care of. She said it herself, she has been taking care of herself and everyone else since she was a teenager.

I certainly thought that scare with the shooting would make her rethink her decision, but I guess it isn’t meant to be. It is just weird to me that the writers would bring them back together, only to separate them again. Really there is no good reason for it. Nic never even gave a reason for why she did not want to move forward with Conrad. I really think They should both get counseling.

Dr. Pravesh is working with a new doctor this week. Working in maternity, Devon gets to see Dr. Stewart perform a C-section. Unfortunately, when the mother begins to exhibit signs of complications Devon brings it to the attention of Dr. Stewart who brushes it off.

When Devon shows up again after a panicked call from the father, he sees the mother clearly in distress and nurses hanging out. Devon has to literally BEG Dr. Stewart to order tests!

Devon races his patient to the operating room!

It was so empowering to see Devon confront his superior on his biases. Him asking Devon “how long have you been in the states,” was out of line and then saying “good for you.” Huh?! What do you mean? I knew it was going down hill from there. It was a disappointment to also see the nurses not recognizing that the patient needed attention.

We find out later that the patient had been in distress for around SIX-HOURS! Beyond inexcusable. A simple issue that could have been repaired led to death.

The writing in the episode was top notch. The directing, when the sound is cut while Dr. Austin is telling the father his wife died was so impactful to the moment. When Mina broke down I was no more good. Mina, Devon, and Dr. Austin all felt his pain.

Mina and Devon confronting Dr. Bell and correcting his thinking concerning biases was a great moment. Then Devon following up with a viable solution, and Bell implementing it was perfection.

Kira Dixon Johnson (1977 – 2016)

This episode was dedicated to Kira Dixon Johnson (1997-2016). Kira was a real life victim of what can go wrong during child birth, specifically for women of color. Kira’s husband Charles Johnson stated about the episode :

As difficult as it was, my hope is it will move people toward action and this will move people to be aware that this has been America’s dirty little secret for far too long. With our wealth and resources, it is shameful. And it’s very, very painful. I’m hopeful about the impact this will have.

The Resident airs Monday’s on FOX.
