Legendary Black Director John Singleton Dies at 51

One of my favorite directors, John Singleton, dies at the young age of 51. John suffered a stroke on April 17th and died Monday, April 29th surrounded by loved ones.

John wrote and director the classic Boyz in the Hood. This was one of the earliest black classics I saw as a child. At the age of 24 he was the youngest person to receive an Oscar nomination for best director for His movie Boyz in the Hood.

John went on to director dramas such as Rosewood and Baby Boy. He also remade the classic Shaft, and directed the action thriller 2 Fast 2 Furious.

In recent years John produced and directed television episodes. Some shows he graced with his magic are American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, Billions, and Empire. Back in the day John even directed my favorite music video, Michael Jackson’s Remember the Time, including stars like Eddie Murphy and Magic Johnson.

John Singleton gave us many black classics, some of which I still quote today. It is so unfortunate that we lost such a legendary contributor to the film industry at such a young age.
