Midnight, Texas

“Yasss, Queen” wraps up Season 2 of Midnight, Texas. Throughout the last episodes of the season it becomes clear that Patience, and not Kai, is working against the Midnighters. In the last episode we learn that Patience, her brother Theophilus, and Delilah are original witches. Patience and her brother were rid of their powers due to incest, which turned their magic dark. Patience has since been on a mission to free her brother from death so they may rule together. Patience tricks Manfred, takes his head, and brings her brother back to life.

As Patience and Theophilus delight in their ruling, Theophilus begins to break down, his head clearly is slowly being severed from his body. Plotwist! Manfred and Kai switched bodies! Kai’s body is not able to withstand the spell, even after drinking Lem’s blood to heal the body. Patience and Theophilus realize they have THE WRONG BODY.

As Olivia is getting ready to be burned at the stake, Manfred reveals himself and Olivia reveals her new self, a vampire! Lem was not going to let his girl burn. In the same swoop of victory, the Midnighters are able to grab Fiji and attempt to get her soul back.

The story takes a turn when Bobo calls in Basil (The Trickster) to find a soul for Fiji. In a bit of foreshadowing, we find out that the soul has to come from someone they have never met. Fiji’s soul comes back, she and Addie (A Good Witch, of the Delilahs) are then able to free Delilah from the painting to wrestle with Patience. The battle ensues but Delilah is knocked out by Patience, the Midnighters continue to fight.

Of course there has to be a turn. During the fight Theophilus’ head is severed once again, leaking out all of the demon power, allowing Patience to take in the powers. Almost simultaneously Manfred summons the ghost of Kai for help. Kai jumps into Manfred’s body and subdues Patience, extracting the demons, and she is cast into the painting along with Theophilus’ head.

As the Midnighters enjoy their victory at Home Cookin’, now owned by Bobo since we found out Madonna was a spy for Olivia’s father. Walker, the demon hunter, shows up and is welcomed to the table. Joe still insists on leaving town and making atonement for killing Addie, even though he was possessed at the time. Manfred is now in charge of guarding the town.

Surprisingly, Fiji announces to Bobo that she is pregnant. Bobo immediately recalls his conversation with Basil, “the soul must come from someone you don’t know.”

Xylda makes her way back to town, after she has crossed over, to let Manfred know he’s “really in trouble now.” The final scene shows a figure dragging a sword through the middle of town.

My Take

The season finale certainly delivered. We see Olivia finally become a vampire, something she has been fighting. Basil reappears giving us more drama and possibly foreshadowing and interesting pregnancy for Fiji. MANFRED IS NOT DEAD as we thought at the end of the previous episode. The action was great. Though I would have liked to see more from the Delilah character. Unfortunately, the show is only one hour, but I was left wondering what happened to Delilah’s unborn child. Was he the one cursed to chase her around the forest in the painting? Was he the man in the armor mysteriously strolling through the streets of Midnight? Was the man strolling the streets actually released from the painting when Delilah was freed?

Unfortunately, even before the season finale aired I heard rumblings of the show being cancelled.

The syfy lovers of the world need shows like Midnight, Texas. Whether it is helping a spirit reach the other side, running the unwanted from town, or breaking a curse, Midnight always delivers. I wish the network had put more into advertising and the budget for the show itself, it could have been much more. I am hoping the show will get picked up by a streaming service. The incredible chemistry of the cast along with the writing and character development make this a bingeworthy show.
